Is your puppy pulling a lot, Do they bite the leash and constantly stop and start and change direction? Find out how to walk them on a leash the right way.
Teaching Your Puppy to Walk on a Leash
If this is your first puppy then you may assume that dogs naturally walk with a leash and love wearing a colour, Unfortunately you are ever so slightly wrong. Follow the steps below to get your dog associated with the leash and collar and then build on this to a dog that walks well.
First Steps....
Start by getting your dog used to the collar and leash. You can do this by letting them wear it around the house or in the garden for short periods of time. Every time they wear the items give them a lot of attention and treats so they associate this with a good time. When you get ready to take them into the garden have them put on the collar first so they associate this with going out.
Getting The Dogs Attention
Once they get used to wearing a leash you need to add a cue. Have a phrase that you used to get the dogs attention, When they look at you give them a treat. Keep doing this and treating them to the point where they turn to you automatically and even come running to you at the sound of the word. You can do this with them wearing the collar and the leash but leave the leash on the ground. Say your word and as they come towards you start to move backwards so they follow, Treat them once they reach you.
Once they get used to this try doing this in the garden or outdoors with distractions.
Adventure Time
You are now ready to put your leash training to the test and take your dog for a walk and implement some advance training. Before you leave the house or garden have your collar and leash on the dog and walk out before them. Your puppy will naturally be amazed by all the sights and sounds and yo should let them take it all in but like a parent with a toddler you need to step in if it gets dangerous.
If your puppy looks like it is going to lunge at something or chase then use your cue sound and take a few steps back, Reward them when they come to you.
What to do if The Following Happens
Pulling
If your dog is pulling then you need to completely stop and don't move until they come back to you. Once they have come back you can start to walk again and repeat this every time they pull and use the word no in a stern voice. Keep stopping and start till they understand it is the pulling that makes you stop. We recommend keeping away from harnesses on puppies as these are designed for dogs to be able to pull easier, Leash training should be done using a colour until your are completely comfortable and don't have to use force.
Barking
If your dog is barking at other dogs or people on a walk then it is most likely due to them having a lot of pent up energy and lack of exercise. Remember to walk your dog at least once a day and stimulate them with brain games.
Lunging
If your dog is lunging at things on a walk then the best method to use would be distraction. Try to pro-actively look for distractions on a walk and use a treat to distract your dog and also make use of your word to get their attention. Try not to get nervous if you spot something as the dog will pick up on this, Remain calm and distract them in advance.
