Important steps to consider when choosing a puppy


When it comes to choosing a puppy and bringing them home there are a few important factors to consider. Where the puppy is born and raised has a huge impact on their health and happiness.


Make sure you consider the following steps before you make your final decision, Put together by vets it will help you avoid getting a puppy from a puppy farm or a puppy that may develop health problems.



  • When you choose a breeder make sure you visit them twice to interact with the puppies

  • Puppies that are not yet fully weaned should stick be suckling from their mother

  • Ensure you see the full litter of puppies with the mother and the father if possible. They should play normally and the mother will be showing an interest in the puppies. Puppy farms usually separate the mother from the litter or have a fake mother that will show no interest

  • Puppies need to be clean, Bright and very alert and full of energy

  • Look for discharge from the eyes, Nostrils, Poor coat/skin as a sign of poor health.

  • The breeder should allow you to handle all the puppies and the mother/father should be friendly and approachable. Remember they will inherit the majority of their parents characteristics.

  • Make sure the puppies have been raised in a home and not an outdoor building, If you view the puppies in a different place ask to see where they were raised.

  • Ask the breeder if the mother has been wormed and if the puppy is up to date with its 8 week shot.

  • Remember a good breeder will not allow the puppies to leave the mother before 8 weeks of age.

  • If there are puppies from different breeds in the same place then this is a sign of a puppy farm, Avoid at all costs!!

  • When buying pedigree dogs make sure you are aware of the genetic medical conditions, Check if the parents have been treated for the relevant conditions and make sure the paperwork is correct.
