How Do I Toilet Train My Puppy ?

Dealing with a pooping or peeing puppy can be difficult, Follow these simple steps to resolve the problem.

8 Steps To Toilet Train Your Puppy

1. Understanding Dog Behaviour

  • It is important to understand that this is normal behaviour and you shouldn't be rubbing your puppies nose in their feces or punishing them. This will result in them fearing you and they will hide when they want to poop.

  • Puppies don't have a natural instinct to do their business outside, Apart from the area they sleep they will do their business anywhere so they have to be taught what is acceptable. Remember to remain calm and patient as you teach them where to go to the toilet.

2. Getting Started

  • Have small treats ready for every time your puppy needs a potty break

  • These need to be small and in easy access, You will need a few every time your puppy goes.

3. Have Fixed Feeding Times

  • Create a schedule that fits yours and puppies needs and stick to it. Having food available all the time will mean they poop all the time!!

  • This will give you a more structured approach and you will give you an idea of when puppy will want to potty.

  • Remove any uneaten food in 15-20 minutes and speak to your vet to find out the recommended amount.

4. Cleaning Up

  • If a dog poops in a certain place once then they will return to the same place again and again

  • Clean the spot thoroughly making sure no scent is left for the dog to come back and mark the spot again.

  • If you have a carpet then have them professionally cleaned or use some special cleaning products to get the scent out.

5. Use Poop To Fight Poop

  • We know your puppy will want to mark the same spot again so you need clean up the mess but don't throw it away.

  • Pick up any business the dog has done and bring this to the potty area outside. Try and secure the scent into the ground using a stick so the puppy associates this area with doing its business.

  • Leave this poop in the area until your dog does potty there again, then you can clean this up leaving the fresh one. Keep doing this until they automatically go to potty in the same spot.

  • Remember to thoroughly clean the accident area inside the house to avoid any further accidents.

6. Supervising Your Puppy

  • This is probably the most difficult part but is the most important. You need to make sure you are supervising your puppy all the time.

  • This is because unlike humans dogs live in the now so if they have an accident and you see it 5 minutes later, Your puppy will have no idea what you are disciplining them for. The ideal way to train a puppy is to catch them in the act or just as they prepare to pee!

  • Watch for them sniffing out areas, Squatting or wandering off on their own.

  • If your puppy shows any of these behaviours then take them out straight away to the toilet.

  • If they begin to poop inside then you need to interrupt them immediately in a stern voice saying "No" or "Shhhh" anything you can say with authority. Don't shout at the puppy but imagine you are disciplining a toddler. Once you have interrupted them immediately take them out to potty.

  • Once the dog is outside make sure your praise them for doing their business in the desired place and reward them, The key is you need to be with them so they understand what behaviour is required and what response it will get.

  • Try not to use too much verbal communication when they are outside and give them space to do their business, Once they have gotten better at this associate it with a command such as "poop" or "toilet time".

7. Scheduling Toilet Breaks

  • Remember dogs love patterns and routines so you need to schedule potty breaks at certain times of day.

  • Regularly take your dog for potty breaks, Younger dogs will need to go more often.

  • Set a timer on your phone to keep on top of this to help.

  • Stick to this timetable until your puppy is used to this and slowly start to increase the time between breaks.

8. Visit the Vet

  • If your puppy is not improving or randomly has accidents then visit the vet to make sure it is not a deeper problem.

  • If you have a male dog then they maybe marking
