After the initial cute phase wears off an excited puppy can be hard to deal with, Let's look at ways you can calm your puppy down
From the first day you bring your puppy home they bring you nothing but joy and excitement. The look on their face when you walk through the door, The energy they have as they jump up at you. The first few weeks are amazing but it gets tiring if your puppy is excited all the time.
Signs Of Excitement
Puppy over reacts
Bites or snaps at fingers
Tags at your clothes or objects until they are damaged
Doesn't obey commands
Jumps up at you and other people constantly
Barks continuously
Snaps when you takeaway toys

What Causes My Puppy To Get Over- Excited ?
Before we look at how to resolve the problem we will look at the cause. Puppies are naturally very high in energy and full of life, They are also testing their boundaries and are not always sure what is accepted. Similar to toddlers they will try you to see what they can get away with. We can cause them to get excited by the energy we give off, They will feed of this and get carried away in play resulting in biting, Nipping etc. Children will also have an impact as your puppy will feed of them especially if they are playing rough and it will escalate from there.
What To Do When Your Puppy Gets Over - Excited ?
Just like in a lot of our previous posts you need to approach your puppy in a calm and assertive manner. If your puppy gets excited then you need to stop whatever you are doing with them immediately and say "No" or your chosen word when you want them to stop. Remember to be firm and not to yell, Remain calm and balance as they dogs respect people that give off a calm and assertive presence.
If your puppy carries on then you need to put them in a safe place and or move away from them not giving them any attention at all. They will associate your lack off attention with the behaviour they have just shown. Try and have a safe place to do this where they have limited distractions, If this doesn't work then you can place your puppy in a dark room and leave them alone for some time.
