Puppy Obedience Training

Tips on how to train your new puppy


So you have finally got your new puppy home and it is time to start thinking about some basic dog obedience training. This can be daunting if its your first time so we have come up with an easy to follow plan to lead you. You can view some basic command training by clicking here. In this article we will look at the basics of training, The mindset you need to have and the consistency.



Before you begin obedience training you need to make sure your puppies basic needs are fulfilled, These are:



  • Exercise

  • Food - Water

  • Safe place to sleep

  • Discipline

  • Health Checks

  • Mental Stimulation


Some of the things mentioned are pretty basic but if your puppy has a lack of exercise or has health issues then there is no need to do obedience training.



You need to remember your dog is an animal first and in the animal kingdom the first thing they do when they get up in the morning is walk. You need to make sure your dog is exercised and walked at least once a day. You need to start by leading your puppy out of your property with you in front and them following behind you. Once all the basic needs are met you can move onto obedience training.



The first step is to approach training in a relaxed but alert frame of mind. You need to be calm and assertive and remember not to get frustrated when your puppy isn't doing what you want them to do. Remember your are also bonding with your dog and they are looking to you for guidance so shouting and getting angry will damage your relationship long term.





When you are teaching tricks remember to make it a pleasurable experience, Reward your dog with treats or praise and lost of attention. This will encourage them to learn more tricks and eager to please you.


You need to remain consistent in your training, Training once a month is not enough as your puppy will most likely forget. Your puppy will also like a routine to follow so try and incorporate obedience training on a weekly basis, Check out these games you can teach your puppy to keep it fun.


Training your puppy doesn't have to cost the earth either so you don't need to go to a local dog training school or spends lots on books.
