Why do Dogs Dig ?

Depending on the breed of your dog this can be down to their natural instinct.

Genetics

Full grown dogs and puppies can dig for various reasons and is not always because they are misbehaving. If you have a terrier breed then they will naturally want to dig into the ground for prey and food. Dogs also dig into the ground to cool themselves down. They did to cool their core temperature as the ground is cooler 2-3 inches down.

Digging in The Bed Before Laying

This is a very natural instinct as your dogs ancestors would have scratched at leaves and the ground to make the bedding softer and to leave their scent from the glands in their paws.

Energy Release

Dogs find digging helps them to get rid of their pent up energy. If you find some light digging around the garden or when you are on walk then this is pretty normal however if they are doing this frequently then they maybe a problem. A dog that is not mentally or physically stimulated is more likely to dig so make sure you keep them exercised and stimulated.

Escape From Prison

High energy dogs that live in gardens with fences tend to dig to try and escape. If you dog is digging constantly under the fence then you know they are planning their escape.

Denning

Dogs naturally look for dens and safe places where they can lay and rest. Dens tend to be cooler and chilled in the summer and hotter in the winter.

How to Stop Dogs Digging ?

Due to digging being in their nature you can't completely get rid of the problem but you can limit it. Firstly you need to make sure your dog is exercised on a regular basis with proper discipline. This means walking with a meaning, You need to lead your dog on the walk and give them rules to follow such as no pulling, They can't walk in front of you etc. Once you have met these basic needs you can look at stimulating them further mentally by teaching them brain games and other tricks.
